While the weather is still cool (and rainy!) try this Golden Latte recipe for an afternoon or evening treat! It’s amazingly satisfying and provides the same cozy feeling as a coffee based latte without the dairy or caffeine side effects! Have you ever seen fresh turmeric root in the natural market and wondered what to do with it? (Hint: it’s simple to peel using a spoon!) Golden Latte Recipe
Unsweetened almond milk (or other non dairy milk) – between 3/4 and 1 cup
Turmeric root (about 1 inch) – peeled
Ginger root (about 1 inch) – peeled
cinnamon – generous sprinkling (to taste)
1/2 tsp. turmeric (dried spice)
liberal pinch of sea salt
1 tsp. raw honey
fresh lemon slices (optional)
freshly ground black pepper (optional)
- Put turmeric root, ginger root, almond milk, cinnamon and dried turmeric in Vitamix or blender and blend until thoroughly mixed.
- Pour blended drink into small saucepan and heat gently, adding sea salt to taste. Remove from heat and pour into mug.
- Stir in raw honey. Optionally add squeeze of fresh lemon and/or a sprinkling of freshly ground black pepper to taste.
Note: The active ingredient in black pepper (piperine) is believed to increase our absorption of curcumin (the active ingredient in turmeric). Turmeric is an anti inflammatory spice so if you’re most interested in the possible health benefit, adding black pepper may boost your absorption of the curcumin. That said, if you’re not “feeling it” – as we were not when we made our Golden Latte – don’t add the black pepper. We don’t always want to “nutritionalize” our food. You can take a whole turmeric or curcumin supplement which is designed to maximize your body’s absorption if you’re seeking the health benefit and enjoy your little turmeric root for the delicious flavor it adds and that you enjoy!
